Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge Parc National des Volcans

Our View

There's really only one reason people come here: gorillas. But then, it is one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences available. And it's not that available, with only 56 permits a day allowed, so we recommend you book well in advance (6 months at least). You also have to be fairly fit, partly because of the walking involved, but also you're 7,000ft above sea level. Having said that, the lodges are beautiful, far plusher than you might expect, the views are fantastic and you'll get a real African welcome (i.e. very warm!). We guarantee you'll never forget it.

Hotel Description

Set in the foothills of the towering Virunga Volcanoes, this unique lodge offers its discerning guests what can only be described as the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to enter the habitat of the magnificent Mountain Gorilla.

Trekking up through the Parc National des Volcans, home to more than half of the world's Mountain Gorillas, guests are able to experience at first hand this unique environment, made famous by the zoologist Dian Fossey. And even without the draw of these wonderful creatures, the lodge, with its breathtaking views across the surrounding lowlands and towering volcanoes, is a superb destination in its own right. But don't expect anything rough and ready despite its remote setting: accommodation here consists of beautiful and hugely spacious stone cottages complete with roaring fireplaces, private dressing rooms, vast bath tubs and sheltered verandas from which to enjoy the unforgettable views.

And as night falls, guests can enjoy some downtime in the library or games room, or retire to the restaurant or bar where outdoor terraces and open fireplaces ensure their utmost comfort, whatever the weather.
